“Doubles Help for A Singles Player”

“I’ve been a singles player most of my life (4.5) but doubles is now my game due to mid-life back and knee injuries. I started looking for help with my doubles after some embarrassing losses to teams with less developed strokes.

Online videos were helpful but I found myself jumping around to various sites in a scattershot approach. I needed something more complete, a book that I could digest at my own speed. I’m a visual learner and any tennis book without abundant diagrams did not get a second look from me. The court diagrams in On the Ball are superb. It’s always clear where players start a point and where they should move to during the point. I especially liked how all possible angles of a return are shown. This really helped me in understanding effective court coverage. The diagrams are excellent and the text is concise so you can just stare at the diagram until you “get it”. The section on Serving Team Plays, which covers the Australian and the “I” serving formations. was particularly helpful. These are disruptive plays that had really unnerved me in matches. I feel like I have a plan now. This book goes in is my tennis bag. It’s easy to flip open to any section and learn something while I’m waiting for our court to open up.”

“Rock Solid Source”

“This is a very comprehensive coverage of the game of amateur doubles. The material is presented in digestible portions and is logically organized for learning. The author/coach not only knows the game extremely well, she also knows well her intended audience. I’m a novice player and the book’s emphasis on the roles and positioning really worked. I was able to internalize key elements and I now repeat them to myself on the court. The use of diagrams was most effective. They helped me to integrate the concepts being introduced. This is a rock solid source on doubles I will go back to time and again.”

“All Recreational Players Should Read It!”

I love tennis but I've always been a singles player - I play doubles socially, and now that I'm getting older I am playing doubles more and more (that's pretty much all the old dudes at our club want to do). I never really understood doubles strategy, my results when up against better teams was certainly evidence of this. The book is well written and illustrated, making strategy and tactics easily understood - I'm improving progressively.
